Why Algeciras is the best base on the Strait

Algeciras sits at the geographic centre of the Strait of Gibraltar: Tarifa is about 22 km away on the N-340/A-7 (20 to 30 minutes by car depending on traffic and your starting point) and the Gibraltar border at La Línea about 20 km (also 20-30 minutes), and ferries to Ceuta and Tangier leave from the city's own port, a few minutes' walk from our apartments.

Staying in Algeciras is usually cheaper than Tarifa or Sotogrande, and it puts you at the midpoint of every day trip, with big-city services: hospitals, train and bus stations, and shops open all year.

Day trips from your Algeciras apartment

• Tarifa (20-30 min en coche): Los Lances and Valdevaqueros beaches, kitesurfing, the old town and whale watching in the Strait.
• Gibraltar (20-30 min to the border): the Rock, the Barbary macaques and duty-free shopping; bring your passport.
• Morocco in a day: ferries from Algeciras to Tangier Med and from Tarifa to Tangier Ville — leave early, return in the evening.
• Hiking in the Strait Natural Park and Los Alcornocales.
• In Algeciras itself: Plaza Alta, the Ingeniero Torroja food market and the port's seafood gastronomy.
