Why Algeciras works well as a base on the Strait

Algeciras sits at the geographic centre of the Strait of Gibraltar: Tarifa is about 22 km away on the N-340/A-7 (about 115 minutes by car depending on traffic and your starting point) and the Gibraltar border at La Línea about 20 km (also about 5 minutes), and ferries to Ceuta and Tangier leave from the city's own port, a few minutes' walk from our apartments.

Algeciras has the services of a large town, and it puts you at the midpoint of every day trip, with big-city services: hospitals, train and bus stations, and shops open all year.

What can you visit from Algeciras in a day?

  • Tarifa (about 15 min by car): Los Lances and Valdevaqueros beaches, kitesurfing, the old town and whale watching in the Strait.
  • Gibraltar (about 15 min to the border): the Rock, the Barbary macaques and duty-free shopping; bring your passport.
  • Morocco in a day: ferries from Algeciras to Tangier Med and from Tarifa to Tangier Ville — leave early, return in the evening.
  • Hiking in the Strait Natural Park and Los Alcornocales.
  • In Algeciras itself: Plaza Alta, the Ingeniero Torroja food market and the port's seafood gastronomy.

An apartment as your base camp

After a windy day in Tarifa or a crossing to Tangier, come back to a full apartment: a kitchen for a quiet dinner and real space for the family. The exact equipment of each apartment is listed on its own page: please check before booking.
