The right area depends on why you are coming. This guide says it plainly, even when the answer is that we are not your best option.
See apartments in the city centreIf you are catching a ferry, arriving by train or bus, or working at the port, stay in the city centre: the port, both stations and the shops are within walking distance. If the beach is the main reason for your trip, the centre is not the best choice; look at another area or use Algeciras as a base for Tarifa.
The centre has both hotels and apartments. A hotel suits you if you want staff on hand at any hour. A full apartment with a kitchen pays off from the second night, for groups and families, or for stays of several weeks. We are apartments with no 24-hour reception: check-in is self-service with a code.
Algeciras is a working port city rather than a postcard destination. The practical upside is that almost everything is concentrated and walkable, so the real choice is between staying right by the ferry terminal or in the centre.
Our two buildings are in the centre: Hawkins Suites at Calle Santísimo 2 and Hawkins Costa at Calle Joaquín Costa 5, both in 11201 Algeciras. Restaurants, supermarkets and pharmacies are at street level, and you can walk to an early ferry without depending on a taxi.
If you want to walk straight from your accommodation onto a large beach, central Algeciras does not offer that. It can still work as a quieter base to reach Tarifa, about 22 km away, and combine the beaches with Gibraltar (the border is about 20 km away; the time depends on traffic and border checks) or the ferry.
For one night before a ferry, either works. The difference shows from the second or third night, especially for several people: a full apartment with a kitchen usually costs less than several hotel rooms and lets you organise your own schedule, which matters in Algeciras because many ferries leave early.
If you come for work and stay for weeks or months, the difference is even bigger; we cover that in our long-stay guide.
These are real apartments in our two buildings, each with its own page and live availability. We publish 16 in total.

The centre is an ordinary urban area with shops and street life. As in any port city, take the usual care with your belongings around the stations and the port, especially at night.
If Algeciras is a stopover on the way to Morocco, one night is enough. If you use it as a base for the Strait area (Tarifa, Gibraltar, Bolonia), three to five nights let you do it without rushing.
Yes. Both buildings are about a 10-minute walk from the train and bus stations, and about 15 minutes from the ferry passenger terminal.
No. Check-in is self-service with a code, sent once you have uploaded your ID or passport. If you need in-person service at any hour, a hotel will suit you better.
